Recycling Old T-Shirts into Knitting Yarn, Oodles4Noodles on RealGreenWorld

This week we are please to have knitting expert Carrie Piper (yes the wife of the Piper part of “Piper and The Duce”) on to show us how to use an old T-Shirts to create 9 YARDS of yarn. It is a very cool and quick process that make a very strong and washable yarn, good for any kind of knitting. Carrie has promised to get us a couple of hats made from this yarn for an upcoming episode. Oodles4Noodles is Carrie’s business for selling all things knitting including cute children’s knit hats and instruction packets on how to make your own cute knit items. This episode show a great way to recycle (in fact this would be considered precycling) something all of us have sitting around our house.

RealGreenWorld is all about going green in a logical way. There are simple things that we can each do to be green. I have been creating green art for a number of years, my material is reclaimed copper which I used to get from the roofing company I worked at, since they are not going to be around much longer it looks like i will be getting my scrap from All Metals Fab in Ogden Utah.

My art has been collected all over the world. My favorite collector is the Springville Museum of Art in Springville, Utah. they have OpusTwentyTwo in the sculpture garden. I have just put two pieces into the Spring Salon and they are being juried right now. (I HOPE I GET IN AGAIN THIS YEAR!)

We did this interview in Dec 2010 in a home built by Greentech Design Build. I love how this piece shows my ability to work with the architecture. this is a curved wall and the piece is curved to match the wall.

Reclaimed Copper Artist Delivers another Custom Commission Woven copper sculpture

I have completed the sculpture for Jane! This commission came from Galerie Belle Ame in Eagle Idaho. I met with Jane early in Nov at her home to check out the location she would like to have one of my sculptures. Se have a number of paintings on her walls, I feel honored to be part of such a great collection of art. As we met she showed me a few of the pieces from my ART ALL OF IT page that had caught her eye. She really liked OpusTwentyFour for a number of reasons. One of the things she liked was that it has two pieces that are connected together. Jane felt that her life had two significant parts to it that though they where separate the where connected together. I love working with clients and creating custom commissions that look deep into the desires of the customer. I also like to look at the lighting, the decor of the home and the room this piece is going to hang in.

Fold Formed Stainless Steel Christmas Ornament new on Etsy

I love how this one turned out. I have seen a lot of artists that form fold but I have never seen stainless steel used as the metal of choice. The blues and purples I can get when I heat stainless steel are so bright and I just love working with it. This ornament looks fantastic on the tree. In Support of my sisters struggle with Breast Cancer

This subject is close to my heart so when I made three Christmas ornaments

My sister with her Large Breast Cancer Christmas Ornament.

for my Sister that resemble the breast cancer awareness ribbon as a birthday gift yesterday. I know this is something I could do to help. My sister found out in July about her up coming (now on going) struggle with breast cancer. It was because of this I decided to make the first three ornaments as a gift for her.

Doing my part to give a helping hand to Breast Cancer Awareness

As I was form folding the reclaimed copper I stated to think of the interesting symbolism in these ornament. First they are made from copper scrap that Nielco Roofing would have otherwise just recycled. I purchase the scrap copper from them and up cycle it into art. In this case I made the breast cancer ribbon. This is not like the emotional struggle I have watched her going through but after all of the self pain she will end up shining and beautiful as ever knowing she beat something very difficult! It is like the mythological Phoenix rising from the ashes of the fire. It is hard to see in these pictures but I was able to get the copper to have some shimmers of pink to make the feeling complete

I will be selling these through Christmas on my Etsy Site and will donate a total of 50% of the purchase price to Breast Cancer 25% will be in the name of my sister and 25% will be in the name of who ever you designate (send me an email letting me know who you want me to name for the donation, if you don’t have anyone I will do that 25% in the name of my sister.) I will send you a copy of the receipt along with your order so you can see that the donation was made.

Asymmetrical Reclaimed Copper Bracelet up on Etsy

I just posted the first of my jewelry pieces on Etsy. I have a number of designs I am going to be putting up but I thought I would start with this one. It is fun and whimsical but still has a side of sophisticated. I love how the two sides are different widths it makes you take the time to really look at the piece. I used Form Folding to create the wide line down the middle and then raised the side with old world hammered techniques. This woven copper Christmas ornament will shine beautifully on any tree.

I have posted a few of my Christmas Ornaments to the Etsy page so far but I wanted to get one of my woven ones up there. Most of my clients recognize my work as being woven reclaimed copper so this ornament is more in keeping with that style. I love doing the Form Folding as well I guess I just love doing both styles of using pre-cycled copper to make beauty out of Garbage.

5 More Formfolded Christmas Ornaments ready for delivery

I have been hard at work on christmas Ornaments the last few days. I had more enteusiaim about the ornaments last week than about the fact I would be giving two of them away once I reached 300 fans on Facebook. I was asked by my niece to create 65 to give give a way to her guests at her up coming weding and a number of people in the Park City area want to know when and where they can get some. I have been invited to a “By Locals for Locals” Christmas art sale on Dec 3rd and 4th and I am sure I will sell a lot of them there.

Me hard at work on a Christmas Ornament for the 2010 season

Park City TV has asked me to be on the show on Dec 1st to talk about the ornaments. With all of this interust I am sure I will be selling a lot of them. Last night I worked in my shop for awhile and made 5 more including 3 made from Stainless Steel. Those are the first things I have Form Folded out of Stainless Steel. I usualy use Copper to make my ornaments but I decieded to try a different metal and it worked out really well. I heated them after a got some great blues and purples like I often do from heating stainless.
